Frost alerts: why the threshold matters more than a simple “0 °C”

Frost risk does not depend on a single number. Setting thresholds for each field turns a forecast into a concrete, actionable condition.

When people talk about frost, the first number that usually comes up is 0 °C. It is a useful reference, but it is not always enough to make decisions in the field. The same temperature can represent very different situations depending on the crop, its growth stage, the duration of the cold, and the specific conditions at the location. Instead of waiting for an app to simply report “frost,” it may be more useful to define the temperature at which you need to start paying attention in each field.

When is it considered a frost?

From a meteorological perspective, frost occurs when air temperature falls below 0 °C. In agriculture, the situation is somewhat more complex. The temperature recorded at a weather station is not necessarily the same as the temperature near the ground or around the crop. INTA also uses the concept of agrometeorological frost, associated with temperatures below approximately 3 °C measured at a height of 1.5 meters, because those conditions may correspond to temperatures near or below 0 °C at ground level. This is why looking at only one general forecast value can hide some of the information that matters.

The problem is not simply knowing that “it will be cold”

Suppose the forecast shows a low near 2 °C over the next few hours. For one person, it may simply be a cold night. For another producer, with a different crop or at a different stage in the growing cycle, it may be enough to warrant attention. The risk associated with frost depends on several factors. These include the crop's sensitivity, its growth stage, how long it remains exposed to low temperatures, and the specific conditions in the field. This makes it difficult for a generic weather alert to be equally useful to everyone. An application may determine that there is a “risk of frost” based on a particular criterion.

But the truly useful question is different:

At what temperature do you want to be notified?

A threshold-based alert changes the logic

Instead of repeatedly checking the forecast to see whether the temperature has dropped, the process can be reversed. First, you define a condition. For example:

Notify me if the forecast temperature for this field falls below 2 °C.

From that point on, a system can periodically review the forecast and detect when that condition appears over the coming hours. This turns the forecast into something actionable. It is no longer just about displaying temperature, humidity, or wind. It is about comparing that data against a condition that matters to you.

The threshold does not have to be the same for every field

This is another important point. When you work with different fields, crops, or production conditions, using a single general configuration can be too simplistic. In Vienor, frost rules are configured for each field. You can define the temperature threshold and the time window you want to monitor for each one. Vienor then automatically evaluates the hourly forecast for that field every 30 minutes. If a temperature at or below the threshold appears within the configured window, it generates an alert.

How far in advance can an alert appear?

There is no fixed number of hours that can be guaranteed for every frost event. The lead time depends on when the condition begins to appear in the weather forecast and on the window you configured. Vienor's alerts currently work with hourly forecasts extending up to 72 hours ahead. This means the system can detect a forecast condition within that horizon, but it would not be accurate to say that it “always provides 24, 48, or 72 hours of warning.” Forecasts change. And Vienor evaluates them again every 30 minutes.

Why isn't checking the weather on your phone enough?

You can do that. Vienor does not have magical weather data, nor does it claim to replace the quality of the meteorological model behind the forecast. The difference lies in what happens after that data is obtained. With a traditional weather application:

  1. you open the application;
  2. you search for the location;
  3. you review the next few hours;
  4. you interpret the temperature;
  5. you decide whether that value concerns you;
  6. you repeat the process later.

With a configured alert:

  1. you define the condition that matters to you;
  2. Vienor monitors the forecast;
  3. if it finds that condition, it notifies you.

The weather data may come from a similar model. What changes is the work that happens around that data.

A field, not just a city

There is also a geographic challenge. The field you need to monitor is not necessarily located where a weather application places the name of a town or city. This allows you to organize alerts around the places where decisions actually need to be made, instead of relying solely on the forecast for a nearby city.

The alert should not repeat every half hour either

Frequently updating the forecast does not mean flooding the user with notifications. Vienor checks conditions every 30 minutes, but it includes a deduplication window: if the same frost rule for the same field has recently generated an alert, it does not immediately create another identical one. The goal is to monitor frequently without turning every weather update into a new notification.

That is probably the most important difference. A forecast answers:

An alert rule tries to answer a different question:

Is a temperature that requires my attention expected for this field?

It may seem like a small difference, but it completely changes how weather information is used. Instead of remembering to check the weather, you define the situations that matter to you in advance and let the system look for them.
